Does Florida require bartenders to have a bartender license?
No. Florida does not issue a general statewide bartender license to individual bartenders or alcohol servers. Florida law generally allows people age 18 or older to work in the sale, preparation, or service of alcoholic beverages on licensed premises.
Employers may still require alcohol-awareness training or other qualifications as part of their hiring and compliance policies.
What is the Florida Responsible Vendor Program?
The Florida Responsible Vendor Program is a voluntary compliance program for licensed businesses that sell or serve alcoholic beverages.
Businesses that qualify under the program must meet requirements established in Florida Statutes Section 561.705, including employee and manager training, ongoing meetings, recordkeeping, policies, questionnaires, and signage.
Is Responsible Vendor training required for every Florida alcohol server?
Not as a statewide individual licensing requirement.
However, when a licensed business chooses to qualify as a Responsible Vendor, nonmanagerial employees who serve alcohol must complete the required employee training within 30 days after beginning employment. Managers must complete management training within 15 days.
How old do you have to be to serve or bartend in Florida?
Florida law generally allows a person who is at least 18 years old to be employed in the sale, preparation, or service of alcoholic beverages on licensed premises under Florida Statutes Section 562.111.
Individual employers may establish a higher minimum age for certain positions.
Is a Responsible Vendor training certificate issued by the State of Florida?
No. Training providers may issue certificates documenting completion of their courses, but those certificates are not government-issued Florida bartender licenses.
Employers participating in the Responsible Vendor Program are responsible for ensuring that the training and other elements of their compliance program satisfy the applicable requirements.
How often should Florida Responsible Vendor training be renewed?
Florida Statutes Section 561.705 does not establish a statewide expiration date for an individual training certificate.
Participating Responsible Vendors do, however, have ongoing responsibilities. Among them, employees must attend a responsible-vending meeting every four months. Employers may also establish their own refresher or retraining requirements.
